My work attempts to explore a dialogue – hence the frequent division of the canvas or paper – between colours and texture. Flat, controlled areas of paint, brushstrokes applied in a constant, single direction contrast with an area where the paint is allowed its own presence – it is manipulated and coaxed into responding to the surface of the paper or canvas and to itself, where accident and chance are allowed to happen. Paint is allowed and encouraged to run, drip and dribble, splash, stain and cover the surface of the paper or canvas.
